Inside the NEW Studio

Photos: Tiffany Joy Photography

Soon after I moved into my Hudson, Ohio studio, my friend, photographer Tiffany Joy, visited to document one of the first paintings I would make in the space. After working out of my house for much of 2022 I couldn’t wait to spread out once again - and was curious to discover how the new surroundings would influence my work.

I was eager to show Tiffany what I love about the studio and my hometown neighborhood. Here, I can immerse in quiet - or in community. The building is located next to shops that feature local makers and artisans, and Heartwood Coffee where I connect with familiar faces.

When I discovered this space I envisioned that its intimate footprint, irregular textures, and idyllic light would support the new work I planned to make.

The vaulted ceiling invited expansive light and energy.

The marks left by former residents on the wide-plank wood floors hinted at the lines I might inscribe in the space’s history.

The built-ins beckoned for my reference texts, inspiration objects, and supplies.

The completed triptych, Ternary, mirrors what it felt like to spread out and saturate again - to stretch, activate, and delight in both familiarity and the unknown. While most of my previous work focused on central form, Ternary’s gestural lines move across, above, and below the three panels to explore novel possibilities through reflection on prior paths. (A forthcoming series of diptychs and triptychs on paper will continue to push - unbound - beyond edges.)

Ternary (2023). Acrylic on canvas. 60 x 120 inches.

When I look at the triptych, I see a record of how grateful I feel to have found my third dedicated studio - and the unfolding of events that led me here - back to my hometown.
