Exploring Form and Essence in East Hampton

The creative sanctuary where I sketched and painted in East Hampton throughout a week in July felt gestational. I received time, space, and attention - to explore.

Back home in the studio, I arranged the sequence.

Twenty-one works on paper intuitively emerged and found their place in a grid. The significance of each was clarified upon completion.

Metra (womb) described the soft warm-toned framework.

Soma (body) stood for the high contrast forms against the white backgrounds. Each of the bodily elements - hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen - were represented.

Psyche (soul, mind, spirit) floated in the inner-space black backgrounds.

The sketches aligned with a somatic experience I had that week: my body remembered what it felt like to carry my babies (now teenagers!) during pregnancy.

I was reminded how nature’s intelligence connects form and essence, and how love tethers the spirit through waves of change.

Each sketch is available individually through the studio. Click here to view and collect the series.
