15 × 12 inches
Acrylic and pencil on paper
Growing up, I was fascinated by objects and jewelry collected by my grandmother, Mimi. Displayed in her living room, a shallow ceramic bowl filled with stones remains a source of my connection to her. I’m interested in how aesthetic experiences are proven to create saliency—our brain’s ability to release neurotransmitters and increase synaptic plasticity. Though recollection of the bowl’s detail is hazy, my brain was activated during salient encounters with it—which fortified my memory of Mimi’s style, curiosities, and presence.
